  • Introduce yourself

I’m Morgan Rieux, a student in Year 2 of the Bachelor in Tourism and Hospitality Management at Excelia.

  • When and where did you go for your academic expatriation?

I headed off on academic expatriation in September 2022, during my second year of studies.

I went to Japan, to the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in the city of Beppu.

  • How long were you there?

I spent 6 months studying there and stayed an extra month as a tourist.

  • Tell us about your experience… what you did, what it was like there, what you remember most about it, etc.?

I would say that overall it was a very positive experience. The campus is very large and fosters learning. It is a very international university, which enables you to understand more about different cultures in East Asia. The people are very friendly and willing to help when needed. Aside from your academic life, there are many activities organised by the various clubs, and Beppu is a great place to live. The food is exceptional.

  • What was the most memorable moment of your expatriation?

There wasn’t really one moment in particular, but I would say all the trips I made to the big cities in Japan were real highlights… Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, Nara, Yokohama!

  • What is the difference between the teaching in France and the teaching at your foreign partner university?

You can choose the lessons you want to take, there is more group work, and the curriculum is less intense.

  • What do you think of international experiences in general?

If an opportunity presents itself, you should seize it… it can only be beneficial for both your personal development and for enriching your CV.

  • Why did you choose Excelia Tourism School for your studies?

Because of the option of studying the programme in English.

  • What do you plan to do after your Bachelor?

My goal is to return to Japan and live there, working for a European company.

However, I don’t yet have a specific job in mind.

  • What are your career plans?

I’m going to carry out Year 3 on a work-study track, which will enable me to finetune my choices.
